Back to How To....    |   How to Create a Robin Nesting Platform

Robins are one of the heralds of spring.  They are not cavity nesters, so don’t use traditional nesting boxes.  However, they will use nesting platforms if they are placed about ten feet off the ground in trees or shrubs.  Here is how to build such a nesting platform.

You will need a 1”X10”X4 feet, preferably pine or cedar.  You will also need 4d X 1 1/2 brads.  It is best not to paint the nesting platform as the paint can make the birds sick.

First, cut the 1”X10” into the following pieces:

Back 15” X 10”

Floor 7” X 10”

Roof 8 1/2 “ X 10 “

Sides 6“ X 8” cut two of these

Next, take a side and draw a line from the top corner to the side at an 18 degree angle.  Next, mark a point three inches from the side and three and one half inches from the bottom. Draw a line from the end of the 18degree line to the point.  Finally, draw a line from that point to the end of the side three and one half inches from the edge of the side.

Cut on the lines and then use the resulting piece as a pattern for the other side and do the same thing to it.

Attach the sides to the roof next.

Next attach the floor to the sides.

Finally, attach the back to the sides.

The sides are cut like they are so the robin can see both sides and the front to look out for predators.  As mentioned above, place the platform ten feet from the ground in a tree or shrubs.
