Back to How To....    |   How to Make a Miniature Wishing Well Planter

A wishing well planter is a pleasant addition to a garden or porch.  To build one, you need the following materials:

4 1”X8”X12” pieces

2 1”X3”X30” pieces

6 1”X2”X16” pieces

2 1”X2”X12” pieces

2 1”X2”X12 3//4 “ pieces

4 1’X2”X7” pieces

1 3/8 “ lathe 2 pieces 18” long

1 3/8” lathe 2 pieces 14” long

6 shingles

1 1/4” wood screws

1 3/4” wood screws

Finish nails

Shingle nails

Take the 1X8X12 pieces and make a box as pictured below.  Notice the pattern of how the pieces go together and duplicate it.

Mark the center line on two opposite sides.  Take the 1X3X30 inch pieces and mark the center line on the top edge.  Make two 45 degree cuts on each piece at the top, leaving a piece that looks like a picket.

Attach the 30 inch pieces to the bottom at the center line with the picket end up.

Take the 14 inch lathe and cut 45 degree angles on each side of each end leaving both ends looking like a picket.

Attach one 14 inch piece to each side of the 30 inch pickets.

Attach the 12 3/4 “ and the 12 “ pieces to the ends of the top.  Note that the 12 3/4 “ piece goes on top.

Next, Cut one 45 degree angle on one side of each of the 1X2X7” pieces.

Attach two 7 inch pieces to each side as braces.  Not the 45 degree angle goes inward on the 30 inch board.

Now attach the 1X2X16 pieces, three to a side, to the rafters as roof boards.

Cut five inches off each of the 16 inch shingles.

Layer the shingles with one layer on the bottom over hanging the edge about one inch and overhanging the sides about one inch.  You will have to trim the third shingle along the side to make it that small.  Repeat for the next layer.  Finally, take the five inch pieces you cut off and use for the top layer.

Use the 18” lathe piece on each side of the roof peak to trim the roof.  This is what the finished wishing well looks like.

Put a potted plant in the bottom and you have a unique planter for your garden.
