When I pick my vegetables, I like to wash them before I bring them in the house to knock off the first layer of dirt and any bugs on them. This vegetable carrier is made so you can put your vegetables in it as you harvest it, then spray them down while they are in the carrier before bringing them inside. You will need the following to build it:
Screen or hardware cloth 16” X 18”
Cut the 1x6 into two pieces that are 5 1/2” X 8”. Cut the 1X2 into (2) 18 inch pieces and (2) 12 inch pieces.
Cut notches in the top of the ends to fit the 1X2
Staple one edge of the screen to the 16” 1X2. The 18” piece is the width. Staple the other edge to the other 1X2X16”
Take the 1X2X12” and make a 3/4 inch hole at one end for the dowel. Do the same for the other 1X2X12”.
Put the 1X2X16” pieces in the notches of the ends and fasten down, making sure the screen is draped below the edges. Staple the screen to the bottom of the edges. Screw the 1 X 2 X 12 inch pieces on the inside of the edges.
Screw the dowel in the handles and cut to length.
The tug is sturdier if made from hardware cloth as it can hold more weight that way, but the hardware cloth is more difficult to work with than the screen.
