Aspidistra elatior - Cast Iron Plant

Low to medium light, does not take direct sun

Well drained

Let potting mix dry slightly between waterings

2 feet (61 cm) tall, to 3+ feet (1 m) wide

Possible Problems

Very hardy, but may attract scale, spider mite

One of the hardiest houseplants, it is one of the best for low light areas, and it is forgiving if not watered regularly. Can tolerate a windowless room, but does better with some light. Likes cool temperatures but can tolerate hot weather. Also tolerant of light freezes making it a good patio choice in temperate climates. Can take unusually low humidity without typical leaf-tip browning. Does not mind being rootbound. Comes with green or green-white striped large, leathery leaves. Too much fertilizer will cause variegated leaves to lose their white markings, so feed lightly only every 2 or 3 months. This plant is not a heavy feeder.
