How to Grow Fuyu Persimmon Trees

Written by Mindy on January 1st, 2018

If you are looking to add a unique tree to your home orchard then the Fuyu persimmon is wonderful but….before you run to the tree nursery, consider this fact. For a persimmon fruit to ripen, it must be exposed to temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit for several weeks. When it comes to the Fuyu persimmon tree, this time is cut down to hours verses days, which equates out to be about 100 to 200 hours.

While the tree(s) are soaking, dig your hole. The hole itself needs to be the same depth as the “taproot” and twice the width. While you can get by with simply planting one since they can self-pollinate, it is better to plant at least two. But having said that this can be a problem since Fuyu persimmon trees can grow to a mature size of 20 feet and need the same amount of space for lateral growth.

Once the hole(s) is dug and roots have soaked, place your tree in the hole and test prior to filling in. If the hole is the correct size, simply backfill with soil and water in until bubbles stop appearing. Add more soil as needed.

Once your tree(s) is planted, set up a rain gauge to measure the amount of natural moisture your area receives. The reason for this is the fact that this tree needs 36 to 48 inches of water annually. Without the gauge, you will have no ideas as to whether the tree(s) need to be irrigated.

Yes, the Fuyu persimmon does require a balanced fertilizer such as a 10-10-10 but only when the tree indicates it. What is the indication? Well, it can come in three forms. First, if the tree is growing less than a foot per year in height. Second, if the tree is prematurely dropping its fruit and/or three, the leaves have lost their vibrant green color. If any of these symptoms appear, you will need to apply 1 pound of fertilizer per inch of tree truck. This fertilizer will need to be spread under the tree canopy during the late winter to early spring.. Do not worry about watering it in; nature will take care of that when it is needed.
