Apple Varieties For Beginners

If you're a beginning gardener and would like to start growing apples, this will help you immensely!

I have put together a list of apple varieties by zones that are easier to grow, and do well without as much care, than other known fruiting varieties.

So give these a try and go for it!


Zone 3: -40° to -30° F (-39.9° to -34.5° C)

Apples:
Astrachan
Connell
Dolgo Crab
Duchess
Peach Apple
Prairie Spy
Quinte
Weathly
Yellow Transparent


Zone 4: -30° to -40° F (-34.4° to -28.9° C)
Growers in this zone should be able to grow everything that is listed for Zone 3 plus the following:

Apples:
Cortland
Imperial
Lobo
Lodi
McIntosh
Northwest Greening
Regent


Zone 5: -20° to -10° F (-28.8° to -23.4° C)
Growers in this zone should be able to grow everything that is listed for Zones 3 and 4 plus the following:

Apples:
Delicious
Empire
Gravenstein
Northern Spy
Prima
Priscilla
Rhode Island Greening
Yellow Delicious


Zone 6: -10° to 0° F (-23.3° to -17.8° C)
Zone 7: 0° to 10° F (-17.7.8° to -12.3° C)
Zone 8: 10° to 20° F (-12.2° to -6.7° C)

Several of the varieties that do well in the colder climates, will do well in these zones as well, however, certain kinds of fruits that have been developed especially for colder climates may not do well. Those listed for Zone 3, including any in the McIntosh family are not recommended for these zones.
